At Harlem School District, we believe that reading opens doors—to knowledge, to confidence, and to endless possibilities. Thanks to our partnership with United Way of Rock River Valley, nearly 30 dedicated volunteers are making a powerful impact through the I READ program at Parker Center, Ralston Elementary, and Olson Park Elementary.
I READ Volunteers Support Literacy in Harlem Schools
I READ volunteers, many of whom are local professionals or retired community members, spend 20 to 30 minutes each week working one-on-one or in small groups with kindergarten through 3rd grade students. These sessions reinforce reading and academic skills while fostering confidence and a love for books.
A Community Effort with Lasting Impact
The program goes beyond academics. Volunteers help build trusting relationships, offer mentorship, and support classroom teachers in creating a consistent and encouraging learning environment. Students look forward to their time with the I READ volunteers, who have become trusted figures in the school community.
One teacher shared how her students’ reading confidence has soared since working with a volunteer, “They light up when she walks in the room. It’s a highlight of their week.”
Thank You to Our Volunteers
This partnership would not be possible without the time, heart, and commitment of our volunteers. We are incredibly grateful for their contributions to our students’ growth and success.
If you or someone you know is interested in supporting early literacy in Harlem School District, we invite you to learn more about becoming an I READ volunteer. Together, we’re building brighter futures—one reader at a time.
