Why It Matters

Day of Caring is more than a single morning of service — it’s a celebration of what we can do when we work together. By lending your time, energy, and teamwork, you help strengthen nonprofits that support children, families, seniors, and neighbors across our community.

Volunteers leave inspired, connected, and more deeply invested in the place we all call home.

Volunteer With Your Team

Volunteers leave inspired. They discover nonprofits doing work they never knew existed, and find purpose in something bigger than the workday. For many teams, it's the highlight of their year.
Day of Caring is a chance to:

  • Build team camaraderie
  • Support local organizations in visible, hands-on ways
  • Show what corporate citizenship looks like in action
  • Create a shared experience that sticks

Get Involved

If your company is an active United Way Rock River Valley Corporate Partner*, your organization automatically qualifies to register at the Corporate Partner Sponsor level ($250 value) at no additional cost. This is our way of saying thank you for the impact you’re already making in our community.

If you're not a current Corporate Partner, you can still register to participate. This year we're opening up Day of Caring to ALL of our community businesses.

Participating Company FAQs

What is United Way's Day of Caring?

Day of Caring is an annual day of action that brings together teams of volunteers to support nonprofit and community organizations across Winnebago County. Volunteers roll up their sleeves to complete hands-on projects that strengthen agencies and the people they serve.

I've never done an event with United Way before. Can my company participate?

Yes! This year we've opened Day of Caring so that all local businesses can participate. Anyone new to United Way is welcome to join the event by becoming an event sponsor. As a Day of Caring sponsor, you're able to bring any size team of your coworkers to our kick-off breakfast and volunteer at a local nonprofit agency on a project coordinated for you by us!

How do I know if my company is a current United Way corporate partner?

United Way corporate partners are defined as any business who has donated in the past fiscal year (July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026) through employee giving, sponsorships, special events, or a corporate gift.

What time do Day of Caring projects start?

Day of Caring begins with breakfast and a kickoff at 8:00 a.m., followed by volunteer projects that start at 9:00 a.m.

Is there a minimum or maximum team size to participate?

There is no required minimum or maximum team size. We welcome workplace teams of all sizes—from small groups of 2–4 volunteers to larger teams of 15–20 or more. If needed, United Way Rock River Valley will pair smaller teams with another workplace or divide larger groups across multiple projects to ensure a meaningful and well-organized volunteer experience.

Are there handicap accessible projects?

Yes, we strive to accommodate for physical limitations and provide project options that cater to individual's needs. When each volunteer from your workplace fills out their individual information, they can state any personal limitations or concerns so as can prepare accordingly.

Do I need to know the exact number of people on my team before I register?

No. An estimate is helpful and appreciated upfront, but after you register as a team, we will follow up with a link to an individual form that each volunteer will complete before the event.

Will each volunteer need to submit that form individually?

Yes. In addition to knowing who will be volunteering, this form is where we ask each volunteer to complete our waiver, give us their T-shirt size, and provide any additional information related to specific accommodations.

How long are the projects?

Most projects are morning only and will conclude at or before noon. Longer, all-day projects may be available depending upon the needs of our partnering agencies.

When do we get assigned our group's project?

Volunteer teams will be informed of their project assignment 1-2 weeks prior to Day of Caring.

Can we request a specific type of project or agency?

Yes! When you register your team, you will be able to select if you prefer an indoor or outdoor project, as well as a preferred project length (half-day or all-day). If you have a more specific request, you may reach out to cherice@unitedwayrrv.org, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Is everyone expected to attend the kick-off breakfast at 8am?

Breakfast is for all Day of Caring participants, and we encourage teams to attend together! It's a great way to get your team photo, meet other volunteers from local workplaces, and get fueled up for the day. Volunteers can also pick up some snacks and water bottles to bring to project sites.

What if someone on my team can no longer attend?

We understand that plans change. If possible, please let us know in advance if someone can no longer make it so we can remove them from the registration list and update your team size to plan accordingly for your project. If a different person from your company is coming instead, please have them fill out the individual registration form, or they can do so at the kick-off breakfast if it's a very last-minute change.

Who will be communicating with me about details for our project?

We have an excellent Day of Caring committee comprised of United Way staff and community members! Someone from our committee will be the point of contact for you on any details related to your project. They will also be coordinating with the agency manager where you'll be volunteering to ensure all goes smoothly during your volunteer experience that day.

Is there an alternative Day of Caring date in the event of inclement weather?

No, we are not scheduling an alternate date. In the event of inclement weather, we hope to shift outdoor projects to indoor opportunities so everyone can still participate.

Should we publicize our Day of Caring participation on social media?

Absolutely! Before and after photos are awesome. Please tag us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn:

Participating Agency FAQs

What kinds of projects do nonprofits submit for Day of Caring?

It depends on your organization's needs, creativity, and resources. Projects have included, but are not limited to:

  • Yardwork and landscaping (ex. weeding, trimming bushes)
  • Planting flowers and laying mulch
  • Deep cleaning (ex. rugs, chairs)
  • Power washing
  • Classroom painting and organization
  • Supply/pantry organization
  • Donation room sorting
  • Painting Born Learning trails
  • Assembling furniture and playground equipment
  • Maintaining outdoor education spaces
  • Clerical or administrative projects
  • Book distribution preparation (ex. stickering and packing books)
  • Neighborhood trash clean-up
  • Deck and fence painting
I have questions about whether or not our project would be a good fit.

Ask us! Send an email to cherice@unitedwayrrv.org and we'll do our best to accommodate you. Safety is our top priority. United Way Rock River Valley reviews all project requests and reserves the right to refuse any, for any reason.

What will our agency need to do to prepare for Day of Caring?

We suggest appointing a Project Lead for each project within your organization. This person is responsible for planning, gathering supplies, and developing instructions.

If you're a lean team, consider asking a board member or volunteer to step up to the plate. If you have satellite locations, you should have a Project Lead at each facility. Please keep safety top of mind in all preparations.

What timeframe should we plan for volunteers to be at our project?

Be ready to welcome your corporate volunteers between 8:45am and 9:00am. We recommend scoping your project to take a group of volunteers roughly 2-4 hours to complete. This helps us match the right size and skill set of team to your needs.

We have multiple projects we'd like volunteers to help with. Can we submit more than one?

Yes, agencies can submit multiple volunteer projects for consideration! Please answer the question on the project request form about additional project requests.

May we ask volunteers to bring items to complete the project?

Yes, but your agency is responsible for all required supplies, materials, tools, and equipment that volunteers would need to complete the project. You may suggest that volunteers bring their own items that are not essential to project completion but may be helpful, such as work or gardening gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, and kneeling pads.

What happens if there is bad weather on Day of Caring and our project is outdoors?

There is no rain date for Day of Caring, so we strongly encourage agencies to have an alternative indoor project if possible. You will be asked to describe this alternative project on the request form and to indicate if you could accommodate the same number of volunteers.

What happens after I submit the project request form?

After you register a project, our Day of Caring committee will reach out to you to set up a time to visit your requested project site(s). Following this visit, you will receive an email indicating if your project request was approved and when you can expect to be notified about which corporate team has been placed at your agency.

Will additional communication about Day of Caring be provided?

Yes. You will receive notification of what team(s) have been assigned to your project(s) 1-2 weeks in advance of Day of Caring. You will also receive a checklist to help you prepare for the volunteers. Our Day of Caring committee will be available to assist you in communication with your corporate volunteer team. Otherwise, submit any questions to cherice@unitedwayrrv.org.
