Yes, we "officially" celebrate Black History Month in February, but it's never too late to shine a light on the important figures that make our community great! Working in the Ellis Heights Neighborhood, I drive by Lewis Lemon Elementary School often. I'd like to share a little history related to the school's name!

I had the pleasure to watch Anita Fricks, Parent Liaison at Kishwaukee Elementary, in all her altruistic glory yesterday. It was amazing to watch how joyful she was to simply help people. Ms. Fricks invited the Kishwaukee School community to a clothes closet that she had conceived, constructed, and cared for; the turnout was as positive as the spirit that created it.

Here at the United Way of Rock River Valley, we work hard to create education volunteer programs in Rockford. We organize volunteers to help with tutoring and teaching students in some basic subjects in school. What we have found through some research is that the same subjects that students struggle with here are pretty much the same all around the nation. Wherever you are, there is likely a school that could use your help with students in the following important subjects.

United Way, in collaboration with Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, Patriot's Gateway Community Center, Rockford Park District and Youth Services Network, offers a weekly Summer Learning Zone program for children living in Ellis Heights and Midtown District neighborhoods. The program helps students avoid the "summer slide", which occurs once school doors close for the summer.

Enhanced Communication Ability

Kids who take part in early reading programs are able to use verbal communication and develop enhanced vocabulary skills earlier than other kids their age. But not only does early reading help your young kids with their talking and vocabulary in general, it also helps them recognize letters and words early on--giving their written communication skills a boost.
