In this Midwestern City, there is no question that Rockford and surrounding areas boast a deep passion for the game of golf. This region alone possesses over 15 public and private golf courses. Due to the high interest of this sport, Rockford United Labor has been able to build a tradition of giving back to the community. For over 23years, Rockford United Labor has supported United Way of Rock River Valley’s community impact by raising additional money by doing what many of its members enjoy, playing golf.  The success of this annual event, held on Thursday, June 22nd, 2017, has raised over $300,000 in fundraising dollars over the years. These outings, along with many others hosted by labor organizations, benefits United Way and have a positive impact on the children and parents in our community.

United Way's Black Male Initiative (BMI) is a pilot program that launched about a year ago. We partnered with Goodwill of Northern Illinois and the Workforce Connection to focus on empowering Black males between the ages of 18 - 24 to overcome challenges related to education and employment. Over the last year, we have connected 16 young men with mentors that provide additional guidance and motivation as they pursue their goals. These are some of the accomplishments to date:

Yes, we "officially" celebrate Black History Month in February, but it's never too late to shine a light on the important figures that make our community great! Working in the Ellis Heights Neighborhood, I drive by Lewis Lemon Elementary School often. I'd like to share a little history related to the school's name!

I had the pleasure to watch Anita Fricks, Parent Liaison at Kishwaukee Elementary, in all her altruistic glory yesterday. It was amazing to watch how joyful she was to simply help people. Ms. Fricks invited the Kishwaukee School community to a clothes closet that she had conceived, constructed, and cared for; the turnout was as positive as the spirit that created it.

Here at the United Way of Rock River Valley, we work hard to create education volunteer programs in Rockford. We organize volunteers to help with tutoring and teaching students in some basic subjects in school. What we have found through some research is that the same subjects that students struggle with here are pretty much the same all around the nation. Wherever you are, there is likely a school that could use your help with students in the following important subjects.

If you want to help offer assistance for low income families in Rockford, then there are some great service opportunities out there to get you involved. Here at United Way of Rock River Valley, we can help you find the right ways to serve using your time and talents in influential ways. The following is a short list of some of the ways you can greatly impact the families in need in your area:

  • Get corporate sponsorship: We can always use more people to reach out to local companies to ask for monetary support.
  • Volunteer with existing programs: We have a lot of programs in place that can always use more helping hands.
  • Spread the word: There are others out there like you who would like to help. We would love help getting the word out there to these people.

This year, on Tuesday, December 1, United Way of Rock River Valley is participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving smarter and greater. Similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days synonymous with holiday shopping, #GivingTuesday, held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, harnesses the power of social media to inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Many Illinoisans think that the services provided by social service agencies are for the benefit of the poor only. We constantly hear that social service agencies take care of the "least among us". The truth is much more complex than the perception.
