Strong Neighborhoods program empowers residents to a healthier financial life

Strong Neighborhoods Financial Empowerment

(Rockford, Ill. - 01/07/2015) – Residents around Midtown neighborhood learned about a free program that will help them improve their financial life during an open house at the Strong Neighborhoods House located at 908 8th Avenue. United Way of Rock River Valley partnered with Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois to create a financial empowerment program designed to better manage money and control spending patterns.

An accredited financial counselor from Goodwill will work alongside clients to help set goals, track expenses, and create a budget and spending plan. Clients will also review their credit scores, discuss ways to improve the scores, and connect with resources that may assist them in meeting their financial goals.

A Goodwill financial counselor will hold office hours every Wednesday beginning February 3, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Strong Neighborhoods House at 908 8th Avenue. To schedule a free appointment, call Goodwill at 815-965-3795.

The free financial empowerment program is a direct response to needs discovered through United Way's Strong Neighborhoods initiative, which is improving the quality of life for children and families in area neighborhoods. With 39.1 percent of residents in the Midtown neighborhood living at poverty, the program provides an opportunity for individuals and families to improve money management skills and to lead a healthier financial life.
