United Way advances the common good with 3 million investment in the community

UW-Generic

(Rockford, Ill. - 06/17/2014) - United Way of Rock River Valley will invest $3,007,782 toward building strong communities and improving lives within the Rock River Valley during its 2014-2015 fiscal year, which begins July 1. The vast majority of investments will be allocated as grants to education, income, and health programs within Winnebago and Ogle counties. In addition to these community programs, United Way invests in other strategic initiatives that support the community in such areas as volunteerism, school readiness, early grade reading and access to human services.

The awards are part of United Way's Community Impact model which invests in programs that produce measurable results toward goals in the areas of education, income, and health. Funding was recommended by trained volunteers that devoted over 700 hours toward the investment process, which began in November 2013. Trained volunteers evaluated programs against several criteria such as community need and impact, program outcomes and effectiveness, and efficient resource management and collaboration.

Recommendations were forwarded to the United Way of Rock River Valley board of directors and approved on Wednesday, May 28, 2014.

This year, United Way is allocating grants to 88 programs within Winnebago and Ogle counties, of which 31 are receiving new two-year terms beginning July 1, 2014. In addition to those programs, United Way invests in community initiatives such as Success By 6®, which focuses on school readiness; Re-Entry Services for Returning Citizens, which supports formerly imprisoned adults with meaningful skills and training; and United Way 2-1-1, a free information and referral line.
