Thayer Joins United Way Community Impact Team as Volunteer Coordinator

(Rockford, IL - 5/22/2014) – United Way of Rock River Valley is pleased to announce the hiring of Tonya Thayer as Volunteer Coordinator. In her new role, Thayer joins United Way's community impact team and will lead all Volunteer Center initiatives including working with businesses to create individualized corporate volunteer programs. Thayer will assume her responsibilities on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

The Volunteer Center is a regional resource that connects people with volunteer opportunities, in-kind requests, board and committee positions, and community events. In addition to the Volunteer Center, Thayer will oversee the I READ early grade reading program, and the 2-1-1 information and referral hotline. Thayer will also serve as a member of Winnebago County Citizen's Corp Council and share responsibilities for disaster preparation and recovery efforts.

Thayer brings more than 14 years of fund-raising, marketing, volunteer coordination and donor recognition experience. Most recently serving as the longtime Executive Director of the Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity, Thayer managed the operations, staff and volunteers for the building of more than 50 homes for low-income families and was instrumental in opening the Habitat ReStore center in 2007. She was a recipient of the Rockford Chamber of Commerce "40 Leaders Under 40" in 2008.

Thayer currently serves as a Community Dialogue Team facilitator and moderator for Transform Rockford and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Rockford Network of Professional Women. She is also a United Way I READ volunteer mentor in the Harlem School District #122.
